Perkins 6 354 injection pump problems

Hello! Anyone with experience with a perkins 6 354 PLEASE HELP! I have rebuilt the injection pump Lucas CAV w/ hydraulic governor New hydraulic head and rotor and all seals. Then had the pump calibrated professionaly and also had the injectors rebuilt! Since doing this the engine starts easier and idles perfect, however it smokes more at idle now and as soon as you give it throttle it sarts to misfire! I've tried everything I can think of ! At this point it seems like a timing issue, but I haven't a clue why it would be out of time all of a sudden! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Zach!

You say all of a sudden. Did this occur as soon as the rebuilt pump was installed? Or at some time afterwards? It definitely sounds like late timing, try advancing it some and see if it changes.

Thanks Fritz! Yes, it has been acting up as soon as I reinstalled it! I did try rotating the pump, and it did seem to help but there's still a little spit and sputter! I'm wondering if my advance needs adjusted somehow or if the cam ring is worn!? Although none of this happened with the old hydraulic head and rotor! I'm also not understanding why it would be out of time now considering the drive plate ,drive shaft and drive hub on the engine all have a master spline and can only be put together one way!?

If you had the pump rebuilt, that should have all been taken care of. Your post is a little confusing cuz it seems like you rebuilt it yourself and then took it somewhere to get calibrated. I have never heard of a rebuilder willing to do this, although I suppose its possible. Is it possible to get the timing off a tooth upon reinstalling? Or does the pump come off the shaft or out of the gear, to where it can only go together one or 2 ways?

Ok forget that last question. Try this: if it improved some with a little advance , take it all the way and see how it sounds. If no improvement, and the gear train/drive shaft cant be changed, you may have to open it back up. I dont know for sure if the cam ring can be installed upside down, but they stamped an arrow in it for SOME reason....

I doubt you need a cam ring, if the lobes are worn badly enough the pump won't even deliver fuel, period, and shoes/rollers will be shot too...
