Perkins AD3 152 engine

I am rebuilding Perkins AD3 152 engine and when I install the pistons they are about 6 to 8 thousands above the cylinders
when pistons are at top dead center. engine was running fine before rebuild. has anyone run into this problem? if so what
is the fix

I don't think you have a problem, some diesel engines do have the piston top above the block deck at TDC. The AD4.203 four cylinder MF/Perkins book I have shows the piston top should be .0015 to .008 above the block deck, it's the same engine as yours with one more cylinder.

X2 on what Dieseltech said. The head gasket should be around .040" thick when it's compressed so you still have .032" to .034" piston to head clearance which is plenty.

Maybe I am using the wrong head gasket because piston hits gasket and then galls a piston. I am using a copper head gasket. can't figure out why this is happening.

Ok thanks, Can't figure why piston is hitting head gasket. Engine has new sleeves and pistons. Don't know what else to try

What is the brand of the head gasket, or the kit you used. The bore of the head gasket should be about 3.660", the actual cylinder bore of the engine should be 3.600".

I'm using the Copper head gasket. suppose to be for AD3 152 engine. I agree piston should not be hitting edge of gasket. I don't know if anyone sales at different gasket. The gasket I removed when tore engine was not a copper one.

I am no mechanic and I don't play one on TV. Never been inside a Perkins, but it almost sounds like your tractor was bored out and you are using a standard gasket. Seems on most tractors the only way the piston would ever touch it. It shouldnt be extending into the cylinder bore. Again. Just guessing.

May I ask.....did you install new Piston Sleeves..?

Did you check as per MF/ Perkins specifications as to the position of the top of the NEW sleeves or OLD sleeves in relation to the top of the Engine block..??
