Is it true that using a Petronix kit will "fix" timing issues caused by slop in worn distributor bushings and slop between the shaft and cam?

Thanks,
Dan

The Pertronix will "mask" the worn out issues. It will NOT fix them.

Mask them well enough that I would be better off putting in the EI kit versus replacing bushings and shafts is what I'm wondering.

Heres the deal. If the dist shaft and/or bushings are worn the points gap and resultant timing can change and vary. So, you replace the mechanical points with a pickup and 4 or 6 rotating magnets on the shaft which sends a voltage signal to interrupt coil current so the coil fires each time a magnet passes by the pickup, same as when the cam opened the points. THEREFORE a differing distance between the magnet and the pickup coil has "less" effect on the timing (magnet still imparts a voltage signal in the pickup even if not the same distance apart each time) then if the old points gap was all over the place SO YES AN ELEC SWITCH CAN "THEORETICALLY" HELP WORN SHAFT OR BUSHING PROBLEMS. BUT SEE BELOW, its NOT perfect or guaranteed!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't anyone have a calf now

HOWEVER this is a band aid approach and NOT a cure all fix all engineering correct repair, because if the slop is bad enough it could still affect the exact time the magnet signals the pickup, although maybe NOT as bad as if it had points.

Dan if your distributor is worn that bad I would put the
bushings in it that it needs and if you don't like points
then install the electronic ignition and your brand kids
will be able to enjoy your tractor . I don't have any
electronic kits in my old tractors , I do have some worn
out distributors but I feel if you are gonna fix it do it
correctly so you don't have the same or simular issue
again .

I put a petronix kit in my boat and it lasted less than two years and left me stranded on the lake, would never use them again. Went back to points and condenser.
