Hi Gang;
The smaller farmers all make silage in round bales because its easier to store (outside) and move around. The plastic wrap stops the silage getting wet from the rain & rotting; and aids fermentation of the grass.
The reason for the "striped" bales is they had used 2 different makes of wrap.
This guy is using a CaseIH 895 which was one of the most popular models amongst livestock farmers. The loader is a Quickie from Sweden which is the most popular make here.

Hi Mitch;
The "forks" are rollers and can be moved sideways (by hyd ram) outwards & inwards. The guy drives to bale with the forks in the widest position, then he gently narrows the forks to pick up the bale. Hopefully because the forks are rollers they wont puncture the film wrap.
