Picked some corn

Picked a few loads of ear corn this weekend. Also combined some shell corn, but no pics of that yet.

I store it in a couple silage boxes so there's no shoveling for grinding. Got about half done when I turned too short and the snoot hit the tractor tire and got busted up including breaking one roller. So there will be some pics of that repair coming. Corn is good this year and dry, will have to get it tested but it thing it won't have to be dried.

I helped my FIL picking when I could. He would convert the hay wagons for corn and I would unload the wagons and run them back to the field. Unloaded by hand with a silage fork then set up the elevator when level in the crib got higher.

That's a beautiful load of corn! My old JD won't pick anywhere near that clean; this year there were more shucks on the ears than not. What brand of picker are you using?

I presume that is an old Case picker?

Wow is right, that corn is picked clean. Did you do something special with the husking bed or is it still original??

I'm saddened that the picking days for us are about over. Corn crib is falling apart. Probably just going to fill a couple wagons this year and that's it.

Yes it is, a model 1PR from the 50s.

I did rebuild the rollers last year, but mostly it's clean because I picked in the rain one day and with dew the next. The rollers can grab wet corn better. And the new rollers really work good too as they are rough yet.

Had to run at half throttle to keep it from shelling, it shelled badly at pto speed. Corn is way to dry for picking at 15%. Should be 25% for cribbing and then it doesn't shell much.

They also made a pr picker, but later vintage I think.

I was also familiar with 1-PR and 2-PR IH pickers. Didn't realize Case also used those numbers.
Good to see you're keeping that old machine in shape and using it. It really did a nice job!

Nice job and nice pics. My dad milked holsteins. His old picker most often left the shucks on but he always ground it, cobs and all! The cows loved it.
