Piston and Sleeve Kit

Hey guys,
I pulled the head off my 9N last fall to have a looksy. The motor smokes very little, but has alot of blow-by. Spitting oil out of the filler tube and dip stick sleeve. During inspection I found the cylinder walls were smooth but you could slip a dime between the piston and walls in several locations. I have been running non-fouler tips and keeping new plugs on hand. Have not done compression test yet as I use this tractor daily and she still runs good.
My question is, When I order the sleeve and piston kit, will that come with the proper rings or am I going to have to measure everything and order the entire kit? I saw one of you guys had a sleeve puller and thought you sold one for pulling them with head off and motor pretty much intact. If this is true, how can I get the new pistons on?
Would be ordering from external_link most likely.

Brent.......you can NOT tell the diameter of a cylinder sleeve without a MICROMETER. Just looking shinny don't tell ya 'nuttin'.

Howsomevers; spittin' oil out the filler and dipstick tubes is sure sign of WORN rings and sleeves and LOW COMPRESSION. Why? 'cuz the combutions gasses are squeezin' by the rings 'cuz they's WORN.

Sure you can pull the sleeves out with the kit. But what good will that do you? You still haffta remove the piston rod bearing cap from the crankshaft journals. Which requires you to remove the oilpan, which requires you to remove the front axle. ad infinitium....

Surprizingly enuff, either the 0.040 sheetmetal sleeve or the better 0.090 castiron have the SAME internal diameter and therefore the recommended 3-ring (which is better than 4-ring) STOCK piston rings are same as original STOCK diameter.

Ittza the OUTSIDE SLEEVE diameter that changes. And surprizingly enuff, you can NOT tell from looking at the top of the block wheather you have the original 0.040 sleeves or the BETTER 0.090 castiron sleeve. You haffta look-up yer piston skirts. ......Sheesh!!!! the embarrassed Dell (blushing)

Thanks Dell,
Of coarse there is low compression, another reason I did not bother to check it. I did not realize the bore of the actual block could be different, but it does make perfect sense that it could be, given the age of the motors.
And yes I will Mic. things along the way and before ordering for my own confidence.
Why would someone not order the puller kit? It cost at least $1500 to have motor rebuilt in our area. You can do it youself "with a manual" for around $700.

Thanks again guys for all your assistance,

Brent,Some things you will need to know before you order your parts. If your pistons have 3 or 4 rings per piston. (2) If your piston sleeve thickness is .040 or .090 inches. (3) If your oil pump gear is 34 or 916 inches wide. (4) If you have rotating or non-rotating exhaust valves - If your keepers or keys on the exhaust and intake valves are the same, you DO NOT have rotating valves. If your keepers or keys on the exhaust and intake valves are the different, you DO have rotating valves.

Once you figure out what you want I would advise you look at the kits sold by this site as well as nnalert in addition to external_link. The kits offer a host of parts that you may forget to include when you order. Shipping and handling cost for few parts missed on you first order can be expensive. Also call any supplier you plan to purchase from and ask who the manufacturer is of the pistons, rings etc. that you plan to buy. Most but not all get a lot of N tractor engine parts from TISCO. If two suppliers get their parts from the same manufacturer it makes sense to go with the cheapest. I have seen a substantial price difference between supplier for the same TISCO rebuild kit.
