Piston ring end gap.

Putting rings in a Hercules. Two of the rings in the set didn't have the specified end gap. A minute with a file fixed that. I am sure glad I checked them. It would be bad to ruin a $550 set of pistons and rings.
I'm assuming that all the ring grooves were completely void of carbon buildup. Surprised that you had that problem and it was due to the new ring dimensions. If some of them were correct, then why weren't all them?

So, what was the "out of the box" ring gap on the two that were "out of spec."?

I rebuilt the engine in my Farmall A last year. The engine kit that I received had a set of rings that had to large of a gap. Like completely out of spec to large. Got a replacement from the same company and they too were out of spec. Had to order a third set of rings from a different supplier before they were correct. I wonder how many people put together a worn out engine from a similar kit. Yes, always check even on new parts from reputable companies.
