Piston ring positioning

On the horizontal 2 cyl. engines, what is the preferred piston ring placement positions regarding end gap locations? I read (somewhere) that on the horizontal engines, the ring end gap eventually ends up at the 12 o'clock position. I also read that placing them at 3 & 9 o'clock is not recommended(wrist pin locations). What are the preferred placement locations?

My son owns a high end engine machine shop. It goes against everything I was taught, but he says line them up with the wrist pins and alternate sides.

Long as ends are not lined up doesnt make any difference they are going to turn anyway.

The B shop manual, SM-2004, doesn't say anything about where to position the ring end gaps. So as long as you stagger the end gaps you're okay.

Exactly.

Lots of high tech procedures out there specifying gap position yet disassemble the engine _____ hrs later only to find the gaps aren't where you put them during assembly.
