Planter Drive Gear Removal

Does anyone know how I can remove that planter drive gear? We are trying to avoid taking the wheel off.

Not sure you can even if you take the wheel off. Those sprockets are intended to be 2 piece, but, due to possibly a break, looks like someone has welded them together. Not certain, but it's possible the inside one is welded to the axle.

Should bolt together in two halves shouldn't it? The ones on Olivers are that way.

I agree with FD45 in that sprocket appears to have been welded sometime in it's past history

I'd try a cutoff wheel on the welds.

That’s pretty wild, to weld them together. Wonder if a chain walked off and cracked them, and so they welded the whole mess back together.

Applied the paint thick enough too! Hope they didn’t weld to the actual axle, that heat stress could make the axle brittle.

Dad adapted a Case planter with similar sprockets to work on the Farmall 300. The 300 had smaller axles so he had to weld in a shim from thin pipe. And the chains were longer to fit the tractor and didn’t stay aligned, he had to make some brackets that kept the chains centered on the axle sprockets. But everything still bolted apart as it was meant to!

When using those sprockets properly, it was important to tighten the bolts to keep a very even spacing on all seams.
