Regarding a John Deere model B narrow front end: I'm ready to replace the steering spindle and roll-o-matic with a used spindle and roll-o-matic. Upon inspection of the replacement part, with hubs only, no wheels, one of the hubs moves in and out roughly 1/4, the other doesn't appear to move in and out. Before the hub is taken apart for inspection, I would like to know a possible issue for this in and out movement. I will be transferring the wheels/tires over to the replacement part once the replacement is installed. Thoughts please. Thank you in advance.

Take the hubcap off and see if the spindle nut needs to be tightened.

Readjust the bearing tightness.

The issue would be a bad bearing and race.....I would take both hubs off now.. Check the bearings, races and felt seals.. Are spindles good?? Replace items if need; pack with synth grease, Assemble- tighten, pin..

Either just the nut is loose or the bearings are shot. Or both.
