Plow days

I wonder why dad and I never thought about having plow
days on our 300 acres back in the day. The A and the 70
JD could have used the company.

In my area in Iowa plowing itself was a thing of the past years ago and then there were a few plow days just for fun. Now the plow days themselves are a thing of the past. Really sad. Hoping tomorrow i can take a couple tractors out and do some plowing around the edges of the fields. Someday hopefully I can put together my own plow day. Got enough neighbors in the area with old tractors and plows tucked away in the sheds.

Are there rules in those plow days for depth or just whatever they want? Reason I ask is there was a local club had a plow day a couple years ago and I went by a few days afterwards. It looked like they just made a mess of what they plowed. Like turning kids loose with one and not having any idea of what they were doing. Looked more like they just barely skimmed under the top of the ground and called it plowing.

Probably concern over liability if somebody got hurt or worse on your land.

Back in the day when you were plowing your own, everybody else was plowing thier own also. Plowing somebody else's likely wouldn't of intrested them, and there for wouldn't of showed up if invited.

My renter don't ever plow. Thinking of taking it upon myself to atleast plow my terraces. They don't really need it, but I like the idea of having some of the ground plowed without having to do it all. The last time the terraces were plowed, the crop where plowed looked much much better. Not sure if extra yield payed for the plowing, but the yield had to be higher where plowed the way the crop looked. Might of been one of those years where plowing aided in no run off, and crop was dependant on sub-soil moisture. I don't know. On a different year, it might of made no difference.

watched several get 2 bottom plow hook to a 4 bottom plow tractor then drive way too fast showing off. should be like this some rules drive proper speed set plow proper and drive straight following the furrow

I hosted one about 3 weeks ago. Had a 450 IH with 2-16, IH-H with 3-12, Oliver Super 99 with 4-16, IH-H with 2-14, Oliver 88 with 3-14, JD 4020 w/ 5-14, JD 720 w/ 4-16. Made quite the sight.

In thinking back, the 1 or 2 times there was a community plowing it was because of an accident or illness that had gotten someone behind. Remember once when about 5 of us swarmed a field and planted it for neighbor.

I was wondering if someone was gonna catch that. Yes 3-14"s pulled by a stock B. If I go in 2nd gear I can usually go about 6-7" deep. 3rd gear maybe 5-6" deep depending on where in the field. 3rd was a struggle this year worked better last year. Even 2nd can pull too hard if you really sink the plow down.

Plow days are supposed to be about having fun. Too many rules ruin the fun. Make it too onerous to participate, and people stop showing up. You have to go a certain speed, you have to plow at a certain depth... "eff that!"

They always go through those fields with a big 4x4 tractor and a big chisel plow, VT, ripper, or at least a heavy disc, afterward anyway.

There are some places that "plow" already tilled ground on plow days. You can see someone just ran a soil finisher over the ground the day before, and the ground is like powder as it turns over.
