plow identification (with pics)

Can anyone help me with the identification of a John deere plow? Its a 3 14" hydraulic lift. I need new shares because the front part of the shares are broke off. i took off what was left of the shares and wire brushed looking for a part number but it is too rusted. I think it is a 55H but im not for sure. Is there any way to tell for sure what number it is? Can i tell by the serial number of the plow, if so where do i find the serial number on it?

Aaron, Looks like you have a JD 55 3-bottom 14" plow. Looking at the picture you need the 14" 3-bolt plow shares JD Part# A10005. They are still available from JD for $27.04 each. Your dealer can order them if they are not in stock. I have the same plow and just bought shares for it last year. Hope this helps. Al

Hey thanks AJB-830! that was just the information i was needing i used the torch and got the old shares off but the part number was nowhere to be found, thanks to the rust. My Grandpa bought this plow and a JD 60 new in 1956, so im ready to get it going. The front 2 rims are at a machine shop getting different rims welded on the spokes. Once i get shares an tires on it im gonna try it out. =)

Am I missing something or something otherwise? It looks to me like they are the blacksmith type share and not the throwaway type. If it is the No. 55 plow they only came with the blacksmith type share and not the throwaway type that would be in his price range. The type of share that I think it takes if Deere would have and it is doughtfull they would have any would be over $200 in price but they can be rebuilt using a throwaway type and cutting and fitting to the old blacksmith type of share. Have to get up to the No. 555 to have the throwaway type shares unless the bottoms have been changed. Post pictures of both left and right sides of share you took off and take of any landside and look for numbers and also post picture of it as that will tell if you have the blacksmith type or throwaway type. And if blacksmith type there are at least 3 styles of 14" shares and they are not interchangeable.

LeRoy, I think you are wrong. My 44, 55, and 66 14" plows all have 3-bolt throw-away shares. We even had a 55 3-bottom 12" plow years ago that had the throw-away share. His picture of the frog indicates to me his has the 3-bolt throw-away. His plow could have been converted. I also have an 810, 555, and an F620 and those have the 4-bolt throw-away shares. A picture of his old share would verify what he has. I think it was the 52 that had the blacksmith shares. My dad converted one of those before he bought our 44 back in the early 50s. Al

I had 2 of the 52 plows along with a medium frame 44 and a 55ABH and the 44 and 55 both were hydrolick lift plows and all three plows had the blacksmith sharpen type share and all 3 had different shares with different model bottoms. All 12" and they had the eye bolt to hold the share on and it looks like the place for the eyebolt to fit in the picture and they used one bolt at the back of the share, no longer have the plows but still do have some of the shares. And it was on this site several years ago they had on about the changeover of the bottoms and it was said there that the 44 & 55 never came with the throw away share as that started with the 444 and 555 plows but they could be easily changed out. If I went back in all books I have I could find the year the different models were made or you could go to John Deere's site and check it out. Years ago I bought the last 2 shares Deere had to fit the 44, it was set on 14" but I planed to change the setting to 12" to match all the rest of the plows but would have taken either 12" or 14" but the only shares that they had at that time were the 10" share but I knew I could modify and extend them so I got them but before I got it done sold the plow.

LeRoy, You could be right about when the throw-away shares became available. All I can say is the 44 (that my day bought used about 60 years ago), the 55, and the 66 all have the 3-bolt throw-away. All I can remember is that my dad converted his 52 and then a few years later bought the 44. Since all my plows were bought used, I have no way to know if someone converted them. So you could be right. A friend of mine has a JD & IH plow museum with about 100 plows. Have to see what he knows about the subject. Al

Think he said it was his dads. That means alot. I have my dads buzzsaw that my grandad bought him as a wedding present in 40. I have replaced the blade and shaft and bearings, Hope I dont have to replace anything else. Likely as not both of them worked with it. Near priceless to me, But then, When im off the farm, nobody else will want it in the family.

Leroy if you look again at the bottoms you will see replacable shins this is the later bottoms with throw away shares i worked for deere dealer in 58 59 and deere had a big push the get later style bottoms on older plows
