While changing the COM fluids on my Case 800 the drain has a hydraulic hose running from the drain to a hole right behind the back axle [assuming this is the transmission level plug] What does it do and can i remove it and plug the holes?

Daniel,

I have two 800b's and don't know what you're referring to...can you post a pic?

Where is this hose located based on the pic below:

If my thinking is correct and you are saying that the transmission drain and the COM drain plugs have been coupled together with a hose then I must assume that the COM oil was transferring to the rear and someone is trying to allow the transmission oil to transfer back up front, that is just an educated guess and if so your COM oil will go down and the rear overfill if the proper drain plugs are reinstalled, just a guess.

Thanks for your replies! The drain plug right below the fill has a line hooked to it and running to the trany. The pic does not have a line instead it has a plug. [like it's suppose to have!] What puzzles me is why is it there and does it matter if i remove it?

reread my post, it explains why the hose was installed in my opinion and what will happen if the hose is taken off

Daniel,

I can't think of any reason other than the COM was leaking into the transmission. As the manual states, they used the same fluid type originally (below).

I'm curious if the 'rear' of the this hose is 'higher' than the 'front', such that fluid would be moving from the transmission to the COM because I don't think it would move the other direction but I'm unsure. The COM has more 'pressure' in the housing than the Transmission (I presume).

Are both COM and Transmission breathers in place?

The breathers are in place. What do you think I should do? I was planing on putting ATF in the COM but I don't what them mixing!!! Is there a way to tell if there's a seal out? I could keep the line there and use the same fluid. But I would like to have it fixed right.
Thanks,

This is a bit of a puzzle...

I would not use ATF fluid until we can verify the seal between the COM and Transmission is good and the line is removed.

I would add oil to the COM and see if it's draining into the Transmission...however that may be hard to determine unless you can measure the level accurately before and after.

I would leave the line in-place until it can be determined the seal is good/bad (presuming it's leaking). However, I'm unsure how to verify the seal between the two housings. The Service Manual includes a number of troubleshooting steps, you may want to acquire on of these online.

How does Direct Drive work for you...any issues going in/out?

Someone on the forum with more experience would be helpful...this is all pretty new to me also.

I got around to putting oil in the com and let it sit over night and pulled the plug on the tranny and less than a ounce came out.

So my guess is its leaking, so i filled the tranny up and it only held 7 gal is this right? The manual say's it will hold 15gal or is the 15gal the COM and tranny and hydraulics combined?

Thanks,
