I understand that john deere used champion plugs in these tractors .What I have been told is to install Autolite 386 plugs ,the champion plugs go into the chamber further though , people seem to feel the Autolite are a superior plug in these tractors 1950 John Deere A Opinions?
 
Those 386 plugs are not correct. These tractors have a longer reach plug. Nothing wrong with the champions. So if your bound and determined u want autolite take the correct one with you for comparison.
 
Depends on what you're doing with the tractor.
Is this just some random information someone offered, or are you actually having fouling issues with your current plugs?
 
There are a whole bunch of opinions on this and like fritz said use of the tractor is a wide range.

I think if you have had better luck with your champions stick with it. You probably had a D21 I think that’s the slightly longer ones

I use the 386 in my 1952 A because I get them in a 6 pack they are in stock at the parts store for everything Deere except the unstyled tractors midrange letter series 2 cylinder through 4020. Sorta like we use the 4020 oil filter now. 3010s and 4020s come in and wipe out my stock. It’s simple.

388 if you want a hotter Autolite keep it clean

386 is in the stock heat range for 4020. Totally different head design and for them it seems to work great.

With my amount of use it’s an annual replacement since it’s the lawn mower and clean up cultivator it is busy.

Back when I had champions it was similar I am more likely to buy champions for those unstyled ones that were bigger and no one had them in town, often they only stocked 2.

When the unstyled B with champions installed was the mower it was the same annual replacement. Almost to day they would miss on one cylinder for a minute in October then pickup and run the rest of the day. It’s time to finish the driveway and put it away change the oil at that point and plugs anyway. You can clean them, gap them, reinstall and test them. Or put a new one in torque it correctly and not worry about it till next winter.

Everyone else’s experience will vary. I feel like the champions have gotten a bad rap a bit they are often cheaper. It’s a plug it’s a replacement item. I feel like it’s a bit undeserved even though I don’t have many in my equipment.

It’s just part of how a 2 cylinder is. They like to foul. They like to flood. They like to use a bit of oil. They like to have fresh plugs. There’s only 2. They like that annual maintenance make sure everything is right.

The extra length must be for idlers, cuase extra length would get to hot to plow and cause predetonation missed.
Archives ,the commenters ,very knowledgeable on the spark plug used subjects.

My tractor is a 1950 A ,mag fired,isn,t fouling plugs , I don,t like putting a plug that isn,t a physical match to the originals.Many people seem to feel the autolites are a superior plug for this application.The tractor will not be worked hard, I have just got it and am trying to bring it back to where it is a good reliable piece of machinery for it,s age Thanks JR.

long reach is not just the electrode. the actual thread body is longer and the threads screw into the head threads to the required depth. using just a D16 plug does not use up all the threads in the head and the remaining ones fill up with carbon. the when u want the correct plug it wont screw in all the way.
 
For 7/8" heads , use a no.2 commercial, which changes to a W-18.

For 18mm heads, light duty, no. 10 commercial, which near as I can tell changes to a D-21Y.

These are your choices in Champion .... I have no idea if this brand was in the tractor when it left the factory.
 
Showing the difference in autolite 386 and 3118 plugs. As you see the 3118 is a hotter plug. And I think the 386 is also resistor plug. Better off with the 3118 for light work.

Autolite 3116 spark plug non resistor: Especially if ignition is a Magneto ignition system

My JD "Ds"....ARs...520.....TEA-20 Ferguson...and 2-N Ford Tractors run Autolite 3116 spark plug non resistor plugs or the "equivalent plugs".


ONLY "NON RESISTOR" Spark plugs, as well as only metal high-tension conductor leads (Dist, to Spark plugs...Coil to Dist)


On the top right side of your screen enter Autolite 3116 spark plug and then read click on Search.

Others may differ, and that's fin
