i have a john deere 70 that i just bought and would like to tune up. my question is if all points where the same or if i should just go down to deere and get what they got. is there any performance options? i will be useing my tractor quite a bit so i would like to get all i can out of it, thanks.

Replacing the points is not going to gain you anymore HP. That"s the way it is. You can gain HP by doing engine work, bore block, head work, bigger valves, cam. But why would you buy a 70 if you want more HP? Why didnt you just buy a 4840 if you want 300 HP ? JMHO....What are your plans with your 70 ? Pulling tractor, show, Parades? or plowing ? And NO all points are not the same. Yes you can go to your local dealer and he might have a set of points..Good Luck

Go to NAPA and purchase their "Best" Points..not the cheaper ones...there is a difference in quality.

Your 70 (Gas??) is Rated at :

44.20 HP at the Drawbar and 50.40 HP on the Belt.

The 70 has a lot of "Torque" (7" Stroke), so raising the compression will help..
Comp Ratio is 6.15:1 for the Gasoline version...4:1..give or take if it is "All-Fuel"..
Increasing the RPM to maybe 1,100 would give it better room to pull down in tough spots..
It is rated at 975 RPM under load in the book..
Ofcourse, a better Cam, Matched ports between the head and Intake/Exhaust would help..as well as cleaning them up inside..
Should be able to get an honest 55 out of it and still be able to use it for Field work..
Keep the compression under 7.2:1 or you will be buying Premium gas..
Look in to what can be done..there are ways of getting more power, but it does get Costly..
In You Tube, look up the "Full Stroke" JD Pullers...!!!
Most Impressive...!!
Your JD 70 is already like a JD "G" on Steroids, so appreciate what it can do...!!
Look at "Extreme's" site, for real Power Options...!!

Good Luck and let us KNOW where you go with it..!!

A Pertronix points replacement system. And Autoloite 3116 plugs with two solid core wires will eliminate many ignition problems. iirc the Pertronix needs a resistor wire in the coil to distributer wire. A new fresh tight distributer bushing if required along with a working mechanical advance system.
As previously stated a cam/follower regrind, cleaned up ports and LP pistons will turn a 70 into one meaner ground pounding machine.

the petronix system will work on my stock 70? does it require the flame thrower coil and wires? when i went to buy the tractor the points had to be cleaned before it would run, it then ran well, i went to deere and got plugs, condenser, and points. first i put in plugs and the tractor idled perfect. then added the points and condenser and it does not idle as well.
