Position Control Lever (Draft Mode)

As I was cleaning up my 8N (ser# 8N201246), I noticed the previous owner had put a eye bolt on the position control lever. When I first saw it, I just thought it was hanging there, not attached.

The eye bolt is keeping the lever in the fwd or down postion. The nut end of the eye bolt is attached to a bolt on the side of the case with baling wire. The eye end is on the lever.

I have not had it running yet, but does this mean that the hydraulics are probably not working correctly? I would assume so, but wont know until it runs.

What is likely the problem with the hydraulics for the PO to do this?

I did not purchase directly from the last person who owned it. It was purchased from the PO by a friend of mine who did not want to see it go to the local scrap yard.

I'm always amazed at the time & ingenuity folks will expend to work around a problem rather than just fix it.

The cam follower pin is probably worn out & the linkage needs adjusting.

You can pull the top cover, adjust the linkage, rebuild/replace the hydraulic cylinder in 4 hours for less than $200 & you won't need to do that again for 20 years. And have a nice adjusting jig as a tool for your next N.

If that's your plan, let us know & you well get plenty of good info.

Thanks for the information. That's what I will do. I'm for fixing it right. First order is to get the 12v conversion on and engine running. I hope I don't find out I bought a tractor that needs everything rebuilt on it, but I guess if that is what it takes, that's what it takes.

You're welcome.

W/ that s/n, it has a front distributor, right? If so, make sure you get a 12v coil & keep the OEM ballast resistor or you will have problems.

IMHO, I'd get it running on 6v before I converted it to 12v.

on my 48 the lever wouldnt stay down.when i tore into it i found there was enough wear in it that the cam pin would slip off the side of cam.when that happened it would sort of let everything go slack and lift wouldnt work.cam and pin were still good but i had to make a spacer to hold the shaft( i cant think of its name) that the control lever attatches too in the proper place.kind of a cheapo way of fixing it but it has worked so far.something to watch for anyway.what i did was made a spacer that set the whole control assy over to he center about 1/8 inch to line pin back up with cam.kind of a strange deal,and i'm not really sure yet as to what part was bad.every thing seemed good and tight.
