Positive Start A

I've come across a 12v positive start JD A. It is definitely positive start with a negative ground. It has a generator and VR. Owner says it was always this way, but I suspect it has been changed over sometime in it's past. What (if anything) needs to be changed over to make it positive start. I'm just curious, I know there is no advantage to do this.

What exactly do you mean "Positive start" and Negative Ground??

All Two Cylinder Deeres came from the factory with the battery's Positive terminal frame grounded. Some got changed over to negative ground over the years BUT THE STARTER STILL WORKS AND TURNS THE SAME DIRECTION REGARDLESS if the battery is Pos or Neg grounded and the genny can still charge at either Pos or Neg ground once properly Polarized. However if the battery polarity was reversed the ammeter would read bass ackwards unless its leads were swapped.

Sooooooo Im not sure what you mean by Positive Start?? but can tell you the battery was originally Positive groudned yet it can still work and generate and the starter still turn the same direction AT EITHER POLARITY...

If it was changed to Negative Ground (was Pos originally) and you want it to charge and the ammeter read correctly, you would swap ammeter leads, Polarize the Generator (BEFORE start up), if its a battery powered coil/distributor ignition instead of a Magneto, reverse the coil leads. Starter still works and turns same direction regardless of Polarity

My impression is that you need to do nothing but hook up a battery as it has been changed over to negative ground in the past they would have taken care of flashing the generator, etc...

John,

Yes, the negative post goes to ground. I know that all 2 cylinders were positive grounds and there is no advantage to reversing the poles. What I didn't know was what all needed to be done to make it negative ground. Will the VR also work properly after polarizing the system? On this tractor everything works properly, including the ammeter, so I'm assumming it was changed over sometime in it's past history.

Thanks!!!
