Possible 3000 purchase

Thanks guys for your input about the straight 4 speed 3000 that I have been interested in buying. Ultradog, it is a gas model with
DL, PS. It has 1800 hrs (supposedly actual) with 75% rubber. No
remote valve. Regular wheels - NO power adjust. NO loader.
Pretty darn straight except for a little rust on the fenders. The
guy will take $2,500. I realize thats Jubilee price and you're
getting PS, DL and newer. From the posts on this site, there is
definitely some drawbacks with the straight 4 speed but still
worth it considering the price.

Thanks guys for all your input, I'll post photos when I get it. I am meeting with the guy next week.

Hey Brian:
I have a 68, 3000 Diesel 4 speed (First tractor I ever bought, But that's a whole other story. ) Yes It could really use more gears in the tranny, but it is a fine working machine. It's stronger then our other tractors so when I need grunt it is the GOTO machine.
I think you will like it.

I have a 66 2000 with the 4 speed tranny and it has done everything I have needed so far. I would like to have more gears but so far it has been ok.

hate to throw bad vibes at you but..

a 4 speed is the worst you can get. the gears are all wrong. 1st gear is way to high to do any useful work. 4 gear is too high also. so this tractor will have trouble its whole life. It will not plow well, it wont even run a shredder well.

just a reminder of what your getting.

while an 8 speed will do everything well.. take all of this into consideration. I buy and sell tractors and I can NOT sell a 4 speed. Last one took me 4 years to sell. And I sold it for peanuts..

Agreed.

A friend of mine has a 3000 gasser with 4 speed transmission.

It is geared much too highly. I find it difficult to use with a rotary cutter around obstacles due to excessive ground speed in first gear.

I much prefer any of my 55-64 4 cylinder Fords.

Hi Bill I agree with you, in most cases the 4 speed is geared too high. But I do use mine for mowing and it works really well.
I would still love to have an eight speed.

My first 3 cylinder was a 68 2000 with the straight up 4 speed. It was only after the fellows here told me that the the tranny was TOO Fast that I knew.
If they hadn't told me I would still to this day think the gearing was fine.
In fact I liked that tranny well enough that I later bought a 3000 with the same 4 sp in it.
That 3000 is the tractor that has been through so many changes over the years and is now an 8 sp w/lpto, etc.
Of course the 8 sp gives you more choices and is better.
But I still think that 4 sp was entirely adequate and I would still take a 3 cyl 4 sp over any tractor Ford built before 1965.
