Possible lift conversion

Will a later version hydraulic pump and lift top replace the older style units. I have a rebuildable set and want to upgrade. Are the passages and mounting holes all the same?

What tractor? What are later and older style units? 9/2N pumps and lifts are different from 8N pumps and lifts.

There is no difference in any of the 8N hydraulics. They all have DRAFT & POSITION control, whereas the older 9N/2N only had DRAFT from the factory.

If you are trying to convert a 9n/2n to an 8n top cover and
pump than have at it. Later models won't work. In other words
an NAA top cover on an 8n won't give you live hydraulics
although it's not clear what exactly you are trying to achieve

Always put the subject of whatever topic in your post. Model of tractor is important, front mount or side mount when discussing electrical, 6V/POS GRN or 12V NEG/GRN and EI are the important factors, not year of tractor really. Even if you post everyday, we don't all remember who has what. As mentioned, all 9N and 2N tractors used a different hydraulic system than the later *n, and still the NAA used a totally different system than those earlier N's did. So, when you say "later version", if not tractor model specific, not really model year, as the late Dell used to say, "...I failed mind reading, just ask my ex-wife...". The top covers are also different. 8Ns have different hole pattern one or two more bolts than the 9N/2N cover but you can slap an 8N system to a 9N/2N. The hydraulic pumps are also different too. It is your tractor and you can do whatever you want, but. to me, it just seems like a lot of work and expense purchasing new/used parts to convert over.

I have a spare setup from a old tractor.. I want to keep tractor going while I rebuild pump and lift cover piston,rings, and cylinder.

ome on, give it up. What old tractor? Another 8N just like yours or older, or newer, or a IH Farmall??

The hydraulic pump rebuild job can be done complete in a day, providing pump does not need additional new parts. You really won't know until the pump is on your bench and disassembled. It would be cheaper and more logical to purchase a used rebuilt pump unit ready to go than trying to change over the entire hydraulic system. That job alone will take days. Replacing the cylinder with the new piston takes few hours tops. Get a helper. Plan on a rainy day when you don't have to have the tractor. Use two people to remove the top cover. One can then clean and work on replacing top cover with the new cylinder and new piston while the other can start rebuilding the pump or replacing it with the used/rebuilt unit. I don't know what 'rings' you are referring to that need to be replaced. If using the original style hydraulic cylinder piston, it had three steel rings but are already assembled on a new piston. Since you plan on rebuilding the system, I highly recommend staying away from the 3-ring piston and go with the NAA piston that uses an O-RING and leather back-up washer/wiper. I would also replace the cylinder with a new one as well. They sell new complete gasket kits which also include a new NAA piston and new cylinder too. I would not use the old cylinder -just my advice based on experience. Caution on where you buy new parts from advised as well. The cylinder used on the 8N's require a cast or machined scallop at the 7 O'Clock position for the cam follower pin mechanism and control rod clearance. Some aftermarket suppliers do not have this relief on the cylinder so you will have to hand grind or machine it in yourself. If you insist on using the original steel ring piston, I have a new one still in the box I'd sell. My email is open. Now, all this jabbering all week about swapping out complete systems and you can could have been done with the job by now... ; > ) Really.

it has the older double arm that goes down to the pump. The spare set I have is from a newer side mount Distributor 8N. That has the single arm that goes to pump valve

he double arm down to the pump says that it is 9N/2N & not an 8N. The 8N with single arm down to pump can be installed on the 9N/2N as long as the pump AND lift cover are used together, but you can not mix pump/lift covers. Also, if the hydraulic compartment of the tractor is 9N/2N, I believe there is a rib to right rear of the casting that has to be ground away for the lift cover to fit.
