Possible manifold leak??

For the last two days I have noticed a noise from my '51 8N. Started out as a high click (snappy - like an electric spark jumping a gap) Seems external to the engine and on the right side. Today it got progressively louder. Tractor runs good. Noise seems to be coming from the rear of the manifold or the manifold muffler junction. I cannot detect any exhaust pressure at that point. I am considering removing the manifold for a look see. Any thoughts??

Cookie.......go out when it is PITCH-BLACK DARK and start yer tractor, and surprizingly enuff yer eyeballs will let you know iff'n you have an exhaust manifold leak ...or... sparkies jumpin' on outside of the wires. Simple, eh? .......Dell

No. 4 exhaust port/manifold connection seems to be a common problem. A lot of the time the mnfld. and/or the block have material burned away or pitted. Others will have repair advice. HTH

If you smoke cigars, light up a Davidoff or macanudo, and blow smoke on the manifold and pipe-manifold junction.---lha

Beautiful full moon tonite in Missouri. But, no dancin' sparkies on the tractor so guess I will take the manifold off and see what's what.

do a smoke or mist test on it. Either will work mist you spray a mist of water at it and smoke you blow smoke at is. Sort of like testing an inner tube for a leak works the same on a manifold.

hose to the ear trick will nail it every time,,, water and smoke trick  what a dreamer,,, must blow some good stuf...

Get a hose,,, I use old 3/8" shop hose,,, hold one end to yer ear and run the other end around the manifold,,, will pin point the leak to the zack spot.... its also my back up credit card

Make sure it is long enough that you don't burn your ear.

And long enuff to use as a midnite credit card to fill yer tank

I had a leak in my manifold once, the engine was not running corect and when we were turning over the enignes, listing to every noise, we hurd a hissing from the muffler. When we took the muffler off we still hurd the noise so we cut the manifold in half. we put a lightbulb in the intake section and saw a huge hole! bought a new manifold and tractor was running great!
