Powder Coating? Good or bad......

I'm thinking about having rims, fenders, and hood powder coated. Possibly even the entire tractor? What are your thoughts or prior history with powder coating. Does it look the same as conventional painting? This is on a 1926 JD D.

I'm not setup to paint myself and can't find anyone to paint it. There is a powder coating place right in town.

Any and all opinions wanted.

JD powder coated the 55 series compacts and that stuff would come off in sheets.
I have not been too impressed with powder coat seems as if you get a chip then rust forms and then it lifts off in sheets.
There are of course some done better then others too. Here at work we powder coat and ours seems to hold up good. We had something too large for us to do and had it outsourced and it didn't hold up well at all.
Had a lawn mower that had dulled and was going to buff it some and rubbing compound didn't seem to phase it as that stuff is tuff !

There should be people on this site from that area that can give you referrals. I will powder coat small parts, never whole assemblies.

I got some air stacks that were powder coated look great till they sat out in the sun, turner blue i will not have any thing powder coated

Kent,
that MAY simply be the quality of the powder medium used... MAY... my cast centers and rims are still gorgeous after ten years, though shedded during winter months.
JD Yellow hasn't faded a bit.
Just my .02 worth,

I work in a factory that has a big powder coating operation. These guys are right about it peeling off. It dont take much to chip it. If you dont get a good UV protected paint it will fade. The paint dont lay down smooth. Its like it has Orange Peel. I have seen it with like sand particals in it also. If it was me I would use Primer and Spray it good Paint.

We used to have our sprint car frames powder coated and that worked excellent and didn't chip like normal paint.I got a new fifth wheel trailer and it was powder coated and the paint fell off in large patches and was terrible .The company wanted pictures and did reimburse me and I got a new one that is excellent. My thought is rims would be fine otherwise good paint with the correct hardener is better.

There are many different kinds of power coating just as there is paint. As with paint, prep is everything, the better the prep, the better the outcome. Several things to consider... when using conventional powder coating the part must be brought up to about 400 deg. and kept there for about 20 min. Cast parts are a problem because of outgasing (you get bubbles in the finish), anything that has places for grease and oil to hide as they will boil and run. Repairing a damaged powder coat finish is difficult. Anyone can powder coat, very few can do it well. I turned many jobs away, paint is just a better choice for some things and I think tractors and their parts fit that.
