Power steering?

730 Standard. Sat for about 5 years before, father in law restored it. Steering has not been very good. We jacked up the front end, and when you start the tractor, the wheels turn back and forth, like a gost is turning the wheel.
Found out FIL, went to parts store and bought regular PS fluid. Oil is foaming. If I drain it, and use JD special oil. Should that fix my problem. or is there more wrong.

Not sure about the standards, but there have been
many posts about row crop 2 cylinder PS pumps sucking air past worn pump seals and foaming the oil.

I am no expert but my manual says only use jd power steering fluid. I used the wrong stuff in mine and it wont work. some may disagree but that is my experience. I suggest you drain the
fluid you have in it now and put in jd fluid.The manual says that to decrease the flutter in the steering you may try to adjust the flow control valve, and go from there. hope this helps.merry christmas and god bless.

In addition to the pump by-passing oil, the vanes in the steering motor themselves can be worn and cause oil to bubble up in the reservior.

There's a lot more that could be wrong other than just the wrong oil, and it's kind of tough to know where to start. During the "restoration", did anyone go into the actuator valve? Were the vane seals replaced? Did he do any work other than chainging the fluid?

Need a lot more info about the amount of work, parts replaced, adjustments that were made ( did he change the flow control setting?. If it worked all roght before, then he changed fluid and then it did not, start with replacing the fluid with the JD oil which is haevier, but there is certainly no guarantee that this is the only problem, BUT, many problems over the years have been traced to improper fluid in those P/S units.

I'm looking at the older power steering service manual, SM 2016, and under troubleshooting it syays for "drifting to either side", center steering valve. It doesn't sound like you have a drift to one side but rather an oscillation. Under "oil foaming", it says to look for air leaking in from pump seals, or to replace oil with proper JD oil. Under "instability" of front wheels, it says to check and adjust the flow control valve. The other causes point to worn parts, so we need to know if any parts were replaced in the pump, valve, or pedestal.

Everyone has you going down the right track. Tell us the whole story as best you can, and we'll try to walk you through some diagnostics. Those are not impossible systems to understand , adjust, and repair, but you have to put your thinking cap on for a bit to narrowe down the possible causes.
