Power take off

On my TO-35 I have of course a power take off which runs my mower and post auger... My question is this: There is a selection shifter lever on the side of the case which is either up, middle or down for the power take off, is this selector switch suppose to change the power take off direction? (I assume yes) but am looking for confirmation.
The lever works in the UP position but does nothing in the down position, if it is suppose to reverse the power take off, anyone have suggestion on why it is not shifting it? and how to fix?
thanks

The PTO on your TO35 is driven when you lift the lever up and that is driven from the engine, if you press the lever down it is driven from the wheels. This is not used very often, they thought that it would be. The main uses they thought they could use it for was driving a PTO Hay-rake, a Fertiliser spinner. they don't fit it now. Just forget it and use the Engine drive like most people do.....John

It seems like I read about a hint when using the post hole auger when you have the ground speed PTO available. If you get the auger stuck you can jack up one wheel, put the PTO in ground speed and the transmission in reverse to back the auger out. Maybe someone can verify if this works.

Yes I have seen that one as well, Ferguson used to say when using theirs, if the Auger became stuck, you should unscrew it from the ground using the Plow wrench to turn the Square PTO shaft on the PHB.....John
