On a J.D. 50 can I replace the rubber o-rings in the dummy ports, with the power-trol unit on the tractor or do I need to take it off. Any tips or tricks in replacing them would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Yes, you can replace the o-rings with the unit on the tractor. One of the field service bulletins, #179-S, and maybe the service manual describe a couple of wire tools you can bend up and sharpen to pick them out and to place them in. I've done it many times, and every time it is a PITA. Start with some extras, becuase if you are like me, the first one you drop will roll under the workbench, and you don't want to stop to look.

Here's some description of the tool.

Probably, but it is very deep. I make my own tools from gas steel welding rod. My dental pickes were a bit short. I also use one that is flattened with a ninety on the end. I heat it red hot, and use it to sizzle cut the old ring into about three pieces. They seem to fail because they are hardened, so that makes it difficult to get them out in one piece.

Hey sbs,
Yes, done it myself many times with picks from Mac tools. The first one in is fairly easy but the second one is way in there. The biggest problem I have is seeing in that far. I've made up a spot light on a stand to point in. With that and a lot of patience you can get it done. Good Luck. John

(quoted from post at 19:28:45 07/01/12) Thank you guys for all the quick replies.

I remembered a couple more tips. Remove the side pipe plugs so you can gain more access that way. I also bought a long leaded light bulb, called a wheat bulb at Radio Shack, and powered it with a battery. You can stick that in the side ports and get better depth perception when you are working down deep.
