I am working on a 1949 John Deere A. When using it this spring I could never keep the fluid in the Power Trol to the correct level. Is there any places that this thing could possibly be leaking into the rearend? Thanks.

this subject has been beat to death in the last 2 or 3 months. do a search on power trol leak. to answer your question as short as i can (i know some of you don't think i can do anything short) there is a cup that rides against a bronze bushing that is the final seal between the rear end dope and the power trol. chances are that this is where its leaking. it could also be a blown gasket between the power trol housing and the rear end. also the seal on the hydraulic cylinder inside the housing could be leaking. no way to know until you tear it down. em me if you want my phone number. remove the seat and the power trol together and buy the repair manual before starting this job. a parts book will show you what all needs to be replaced. the bronze bushing isn't avaiable any more and you may have to have one made. the seal between this bushing and the cup in there is crutical as far as the finish on the two mating surfaces go.

when you go back up don't let the key that drives the pto pump drop out on you. it will run your day. don't ask. the mating surface has to be mirrow smooth and perfectly flat between the cup with the two washers in it and the bronze bushing. you must replace the spring. compare the height of the new and old and you'll see why. double the seals around the shaft where to pto exists. put one in where it face right and the other end backwards. this backwards facing seal will push dirt away from the inner seal. dust getting to the inner seal lip is like adding sand paper to it and that is where the groove in the shaft comes from. don't ever put a new seal back in as deep as the old one. make the lip ride on a new part of the shaft.
