I am replacing leather cup and associated gaskets. Should cylinder bore have a cross-hatch pattern or smooth? Thanks

You only need a cross hatch pattern when you are using metal to metal to form a seal. The cross hatch pattern allows the two pieces, as in a piston ring and a cylinder wall surface, to wring together. For a rubber or leather seal, perfection would be a mirror finish, such as you find inside a modern hydraulic cylinder, which this is.

I honed out all the scratches. Going to try some 600 grit wet sand paper to smooth out the bore. I don"t want to do this again. There was a one inch chunk of the cup missing.
