Precleaner Factory Option?

Question for the masses I've seen many different brands with different variations of an air precleaner ie Mason Jar attached to a fixture that goes inline with the air intake. Was that a factory option or something farmer's/operators added depending on their region? Asking to learn more about this wonderful hobby we all enjoy.

Of my 4 Farmall Ms, 3 have the jar precleaner while the oldest one has just the round dome with the screen on the bottom. I believe they are all factory installed units.

The mason jar attachment was a factory pre cleaner on IH tractors but aftermarket pre cleaner attachments with the jar were made also...have seen them on LA Case and DC Case tractors.

the air cleaner with the original Ball jar is the donaldson air pre-cleaner. the mushroom style is the ihc air cleaner . thats the way i have known them. but it seams odd that they would go to donaldson for air cleaners when ihc built all their own stuff, or mostly did. was pretty much a 1950's thing with them Ball jars and they worked good instead of having the dirt go directly in the oil sump. in the 1960's and later they used the plastic pre-cleaner on the top.
