Primer color

I have been told that a primer color similar to the final paint color will result in the best top coat color. Is this true? Would a dark primer make the final color darker and a white primer make the final color brighter?

What color would be best to go under Flambeau Red for a Case?

I painted a skidloader that burned orange/yellow year ago. Used J.D. yellow primer. Thats my reasoning was the color would be better with same color primer. Just make sure primer will go with the paint your putting on. no reaction between the two.

When I painted my allis G, I used some of ppg's DPLF primer in red to supposedly save on a topcoat layer. Net results was I found it harder to tell when I missed when looking threw glasses and a saftey mask. Now I need to find what to do with the extra topcoat paint I have. In other words it didn't work for me.

What Jason says. And use quality paint and the primer color becomes immaterial. I like a contrasting color so I that I don't miss any hard to see places.

white under yellow or red works well just make sure you cover everything evenly it makes the colors brighter unless you paint untill full hiding

If the primer color makes a difference in the final color then you DON'T have complete hiding and you don't have enough mil thickness. If 3 coats of color doesn't completely hide any color primer then you are overthinning or the paint is too transparent (junk) and you need to get a different brand. I have never in 35 yrs of painting EVER had any hiding problems with ANY color primer. Some people try to tint the primer to a color similar to their top-coat so if they get a chip later on the chip wont show up as bad. A chip is a chip , you should fill it in with touch up anyway so what's it matter what color the primer showing through is??? Marketing , marketing , marketing!!! Produce it , spread some rumors , sell it.
