Primitive heater

I walk quite a ways to my deer stand and need a small heater.I used to make one with a roll of toilet paper stuffed inside a quart paint can.I used store bought alcohol (don’t remember if it was rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.which one is flammable and makes no scent while burning?

Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol mixed with water and possibly other ingredients. Rubbing alcohol is sold with various percentages of isopropyl in it and may or may not have other ingredients added. You need to read the labels.

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is in alcoholic beverages. Denatured alcohol is ethanol with ingredients added to make it unfit for human consumption. Denatured alcohol is used as a fuel among other things.

Sounds like a smudge pot like we did with diesel and cotton seed hulls. "I love the smell of paint fumes and alcohol in the morning." Goody, goody.

That would be something that could be kicked over and cause a disaster. Think about one of those little Coleman heaters run by a small cylinder. Easy to shut off.

No trace of paint left it’s odorless when burning

We hunt deer in extreme N MN, where it has been as cold as -19F on opening morning, but this year it got to 52F during the day, thanks to climate change! So, we have 6 heated stands, they all have little propane heaters that I built, with chimneys. I would not use an unvented heater in a stand, it will fog up the windows and eventually kill you! Here is one of the heaters and the stand that I use most of the time, I have shot a lot of deer out of it! Since this is a tractor forum, there is one in the photo!

It's been a very successful stand for 15 years, so I don't think it matters, it is there all the time, the deer are used to it. originally it was also used as a fish house too, that's one reason for the color, and that's the siding that the re-store had really cheap! When we used to spend the winter in MN, I would lift it off the tower, put it on a trailer and haul it out on the lake and fish, but now we spend the winters in AZ.

From the picture, it looks like the red and white camouflage worked out quite well. I have always thought that deere were color blind. Has something changed?

A couple of reasons it's red and white, first, the siding was really inexpensive. When you put a fish house out on a lake, it needs to have some bright dark color on it so it doesn't get run into by a vehicle or snowmobile. But, if you run the dark siding all the way down then the sun melts the snow away from the house, making it colder! As far as a deer stand, I don't think it matters what color they are, as long as it's been there for a couple of years, the deer we shoot are only 3-4 years old.

Pretty snazzy hunt shack and furnace. I don't believe it matters on the color.I believe it matters more if it is what is a regular scene for the deer. Like setting some round bales together with an opening in them to set in would work also as long as they set there year round. As for the color blind thing can't say. I would imagine they are like Cattle just see an image more than good site. Those radar recievers (ears) on top get more for them.

Odorless to you but not sure it's odorless to deer.
Having said that, I've seen plenty of guys bag deer while smoking cigarettes.

Wish climate change would warm it up around my place some, was cold and windy this weekend and I had to be outside finishing up getting ready for winter. Saturday that cold wind was awful

One cold weekend doesn't negate climate change, I just read this morning that the safe ice season in MN is 2 weeks shorter than it was 50 years ago. Arizona had a record hot summer, and it's still almost 10 degrees above normal.

Sure isn't getting warmer where I live, sadly. The river near my house is already froze over, that usually doesn't happen til after Christmas.

When I lived N of St Cloud MN, I almost always had my fish house out on the Mississippi the first week of December, but that was 25 years ago.

We are in a la Nina this winter. Colder and wetter in Minnesota through February. That affects 3/4ths of the posters here. Time to get out the parkas and long underwear. I'm waiting for someone to invent battery operated heated long underwear or shirt and pants.

I found some battery operated vests and stuff on Amazon. Didn't look long to see what works.
