Problems shifting 40U

I have posted questions before and always got good advice. Need help again. I have a 1955 40U with shifting problems. Going from 2nd to reverse works good, I'm backblading Snow in Ohio, but trying to get into 3rd then back to reverse is like trying to find a frog in a lake. Looking at the parts book I can't see what to look for first. I hope its just something needing tightened, like the shifting problems I had with the 60. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks---Joe

My 40 std's shifter is very sloppy also. I'm assuming it wasn't always like this. Maybe it's the nature of the beast. I pulled the shifter off but really can't see anything wrong. What part of Ohio are you in?

The original shifters on those are retarded. I like the ones on the later 420 models with a gated tower. JD had a service bulletin on these to put the newer type on. I'd find one and put it on since you use this tractor it will work much better.

There is a pin where the shift lever goes through the transmission cover that fits into a groove in the shift lever. The pin(M1970T) can loosen which results in the shifter being sloppy, making it tough to find the gear you want. The groove in the shift lever can get worn too, making it worse. You can tack-weld the pin in place to stop it from moving. The groove in the lever can be built up and re-cut.

what about a broken or weak detent spring or worn detent ball. this is what locates/holds the shift fork in place along the shift rails. good luck, d. coleman
