When was the last time that you removed the distributor, replaced the points and condensor with a quality set?

Then will they set on .015 on all 4 lobes?

How snug are the bottom, and top brass bushings?

Do you lubricate the cam the points ride on?

I can imagine points sticking "OPEN", but not "closed", as something would have to bend as the cam lobe passed the rub block on the points if they were stuck closed and could not open.

IGNITION POINTS CLOSING CAUSES

The points can close when the cam wiper is worn down from lack of lubrication or accumulation of dust on the points cam either of which will cause the wiper to be ground down thus closing the points.

Another way that the points on the N tractor can be caused to close is if the points are fabricated from plastic instead of Bakelite material. The plastic material can become molten and change shape if the engine switch is left on when the engine is not running and the points are closed. Also they can get too hot if there is too much voltage going to the coil as when the ignition resistor has been by-passed or a 12 volt system has been installed and the system has too much voltage going to the coil because of too little resistance in the circuit to protect the coil and points.

Marty;
I'd just about bet, that the star washers for the points hold-down screws are missing.......OR...the screws are stripped letting the points close and stay that way!!!!!!
NEW screws and star washers for the new set of points.
Use ...BLUESTREAK points kit...(vented)...part#FD6769x
NAPA part#CS35 frt. mount dist. points kit.
Last set of these I bought, had new screws and washers in it.!!!

You've received all good info. Here's another problem. Couple years back I put in a new set of points. Later tractor wouldn't start. Took dist. off and found the points froze up. They came without the brass bushing that the post rides through. The fiber material got hot and fastened to the post. Had to break them apart to get them off. Good luck in finding your problem. Ron
