Proof meters and cables

What has the experience been with the proof meters and cables from this site? I bought the gauge kit for my 841 and a new metal cable. The meter worked for about 10 minutes of run time. When I removed the cable, the keyway spline that goes into the hydraulic pump was sheared off. I ordered another cable after checking the drive bolt and adapter shaft. They looked good with no wear. The new cable came in so I hooked it up and turned it with a drill. There was a noticeable hard spot in turning the cable. In trying to disassemble the cable from the meter, the cable is stuck in the meter.

Thoughts?

Been a long time since I had a problem but as I recall the end(s) of the cable are pressed into a square and if I'm not mistaken, it is a wedge shaped square. So, you might be fighting the wedge.

Another thing is that you have to get the squares on the shaft lined up with the squares in the drive and driven components.

With the cable being stuck in the meter and the other end broken, sounds to me like you didn't have the drive end in the socket properly when you tightened the nut causing the driven end to jam in the meter.....too long as a result of the misalignment of the other end, and the driving end chewed up by the source.

Powdered graphite is the preferred lubricant for that cable. Auto parts stores stock it. I just shake out a goodly amount on a rag and wipe the cable back and forth as you work along it's length, grasped in the rag to work it in the cable.

I'm not a fan of graphite for a tractor that can get water on it. I'm a fan of washing my 640 when it gets dirty. That led to the graphite getting wet and turning into something akin to a pencil lead, binding the cable and breaking it at the low place on the cable.
Tried lubing it with light oil, can't remember how long that one lasted before it broke also.
Best luck so far has been a light coating of grease, same kind I use for my weed eater cable. Noticed also there is no longer any needle bounce like I had before.
Just my $.08 cents.....$.02 adjusted for inflation.

The first cable did not get stuck to the meter. The nipple was sheared off on the pump end. The second new cable is the one that's stuck to the proof meter. I think the meter itself hit a snag internally. While trying to turn the cable by hand, there is a definite snag. When I turned it by the drill, the needle didn't move.

I did the powered graphite thing on my cable and meter.

I was getting some bounce, took the meter off and poured powdered graphite down the cable hole then pull the wire drive cable out of the cover, cleaned it and coated it with powdered graphite,

was years ago and its still working fine,
however, my tractor sets in the barn when not in use and I rarely ever use it in the rain,
so cable does not come in contact with water that much,

so far, so good,

When you say cleaned it, did you soak it in solvent to get everything off or just wipe it clean? YT is sending me a new gauge and cable when they figure out how to get just the gauge because they only sell the kit of all gauges.

Honestly do not remember, but I am pretty good about cleaning stuff, so I would guess I cleaned it good with solvent then worked it through the
cable holder to insure the inside of the cable holder was clean
Let it dry then give it a abundant coating of dry graphite

Worth a shot!

I recently replaced a cable and proof meter. The cable came with the inside shaft too short so I had to press the sheath fitting on a bit further. Then the cable and meter worked for about 2 hours. Now the cable has completely froze. I installed the original cable but no go. At this point I do not know if the meter is bad or the original cable is worn out. I'll get back to it some day but for now i just curse a lot.

(quoted from post at 22:53:39 07/01/16) Did your drill spin the cable in the right direction for the needle to register?

Yes sir.......I turned the tractor over while looking at the hydraulic pump adapter to make sure I was spinning it in the right direction. I was warned about turning it the wrong direction. It unravels the spring cable.
