Proofmeter?

I just need to know what the proof meter hooks up into. I am assuming from what i have read that it goes into the distributor and the governor.

Frank.......the proofmeter is connected by a shielded speedometer cable to the back of the governor's cup. Has 'nuttin' to do with dizzy. ......HTH, Dell

only the later 8N's with a side mount distributor has agovernor to mount the proof meter to. sohuld be able to mount newer governor with proofmeter drive point.

Frank......replacement and all OEM proofmeter 8N governor cups have a fitting for the proofmeter speedometer cable. Go look. Distributor has NOTHING to do with proofmeter, understand??? .......respectfully, Dell

so the governor is in front of the carb, i see a external oil line, a nub of metal underneath that, and another on the exterior side of the governor.

instead of using an aftermarket proofmeter could a 4 speed transmission tach be used in the same manner? without modification.

Frank.......there are wrist watch battery operated LCD solid state tachs that you can double-back tape to yer dash panel. $25 (cheap) Available at places like Northern Hydraulics, JC Whitney, profession lawn mower shops. Tranny has 'nuttin' to do with tachometer operation. Of course you can gitt a HOT-ROD tachometer you can stem mount on the hood like the BIG BOYS. your call.......Dell

If I'm not really mistaken (and I've been known to be a time or two) the Proofmeter connects beneath the screw off cap that you can see in the center of this picture. You just screw the cap off and screw the cable in place.
If I'm wrong, someone please tell me because I'm planning to buy a Proofmeter and add it to my early 1950 8N by connecting it to this location. Gene

i guess we don't want a proofmeter with an hour counter. but we do want a tach. these mount on the back of the generator? or part of the ignition assy., to count how many times it sends elect. to the plugs to see how many times the crankshaft is turning and how many RPMs it is at.

so just any old run of the mill tach can be used, but where do they mount? im going into oriellys today, and i will ask questions there, but thanks for the help guys, any more suggestions and comments are welcome!

i'm a certified Brunswick A2 mechanic and work on pinsetters and lane machines, just never been an auto or tractor kind of guy.

bottom line.. if your governor has an operable proofmeter drive.. you are 90% of the way there.. just got to get a cable, meter, and mount it.

if your gov ain't got it.. you can always get new gov parts...

Frank.......you do understand that "proofmeter" was a Ford advertisement enhancement, don't you? As in PROOF of performance. Yes, it has an engine tachometer run by the governor and scaled bands showing MPH in each gear.

All engine tachometers that I know about need access to the ignition points. This is next to IMPOSSIBLE to do with the 4-nipple frontmount distributor. Understand??? That is WHY we recommend the LCD dashboard tacho. It also has a running hour meter as a function.

HOT-ROD tachometers also connect to the ignition points and cost $150. You doubt? go shopping.

Its yer tractor, please yer self. .......respectfully, Dell

well, that's what i was saying. if he has an operable drive, he's good to go.. otherwise he needs to get all parts involved to get an operable drive... IE.. not just the housing with screw on cap.

I probably didn't say it right.
