Propane torch tip

I have two propane torch tips that I use for soldering copper pipe and they are both hard to light, and when lit, will go out if I tip the torch sideways quickly. Are the tips dirty? Can they be cleaned up?

I have always found that if you hold the tip close to the surface of the bench while you are setting the flame it works best.
