Pros Cons Set Back Front Wheels

I am looking at an Oliver 1850 with the set back front wheels. The majority of olivers I see seem to have the normal front wheels set just ahead of the radiator. My question is, are there any disadvantages to have the wheels set back like this? What was the reason for offering this option?

When they were new we sold a lot of the set back axles to tomato growers. By the way there is a clean 1850 for sale near me. I am in northwest Ohio

What are the reasons for the set back axles?

Mainly for a shorter turning radius, downfall is the tractor will not ride as well with a shorter wheelbase.

Two of my 1550 Olivers have the set back axles,I like them.Not a lot of difference really from the others.Really the front axle under the 1600 and 1550 utility is pretty much like the set backs.

More maneuverable with set back front axle, but the tractor has more weight on the front and is not quite as balanced as with a forward axle. A set back axle will carry more of the weight of the tractor and could show wear sooner.

Had a guy here in the neighborhood that bled green and wanted to be buried in Moline. His son started switching from Deere to the 90 series Cases with the short wheelbases. The old man was complaining about them one day, that after just a few hours driving them he had to pull his pants down out of his arm pits. LOL

Pro:I think they turn shorter with the setback axle. Con: I think they don’t look right with the setback axle. Grew up with 1750 and 1850 and 1855. All with set forward axle. P.S. my 1950 mfd has the axle set back but still doesn’t turn very short.
