PTO clutch adjustment

After removing the inspection plate underneath,i need to know which way to turn the 3 bolts in order to get the pto to engage without grinding? I had set all three to 90 thousanths when i had the clutch out.

Here's a trick. Don't tell anyone. Losen the clutch pedal till it has no grip at all. Wiggle the shaft a few times. Push it to the ....? counter clockwise anyway, keep it there, tie the clutch pedal up if you dont't have a helper, keeping the pedal tight to it's stopper on the case, then tighten it down. Gravity might give you the 3/8" or whatever it is suppose to have. If this doesn't work, I got no idea.....btw, go read what I posted in the massey forum a few hours ago.

When you loosen the bolt, the shaft goes left and peddle falls to running board.I think clockwise is correct. I read your post about the 35 with ps,mp,and for $1200,You shoulda talked him into a trade for a 23c!!

Good , pedal falls, then throw out bearing wants to be tight to the fingers, torque it down, see what happens. It may not work, but better than going inside again

You turn the adjusting screws in-wards, like tightening them up. drop the clearance from .090" to .080" and try again, if it still grinds, check the pedal clearance, it should be 3/8" between pedal and underside of footrest. you can close the gap on the clutch a little more, BUT never less than .065" or you could smash the fingers on the clutch. The pedal adjustment only really controls the clearance on the wheel drive clutch, to alter the PTO clutch you need to adjust the three setscrews. You should slow the engine speed right down when you try to engage a gear as it spins the gearbox over as it takes a little while to slow down and so it will grind if you don't....John

John I spent most of yesterday morning working on the 3 bolts thru the inspection plate, seemed like it worked better around 80 than even 60, coundn't figure that out.You will soon get an email with MORE problems.

I have already replied to this and your email earlier but for anyone else considering adjusting their PTO Clutch, I did say NEVER adjust the gap to less than .065" or there is a danger the Fingers on the Clutch will strike the Clutch Cover and Flywheel and get damaged.
The idea when you adjust the PTO Clutch is do it in no more that.010" at a time and then try it. You should throttle the engine right back to idle when you are changing gear because the Engine drives the Transmission and it will keep turning with the speed of the engine and gradually slow down, but if you slow the engine first it wont take as long for it to stop turning. The Transmission on these tractors is quite heavy as you know and it does take some stopping when it is turning fast and/or if the Clutch is dragging, this only makes matters worse. Don't forget to adjust the Clutch pedal, it should be 3/8" under the footrest and the pedal and the tractor should be at working temperature when you do this as everything will expand when it does get hot and this could cause the Clutch to slip and that would make it get really hot, if you set it up cold. If you need more information about all this, email me and I will send it, just tell me your problem [email protected]
