PTO clutch

.... I mow with an 8n and a 9n.... Niether live PTO.... So I need a clutch....
. What is the best clutch I can get? I need something heavy duty... i am in open fields now, but don't want to be an idiot and not have one of these, and have a machine climb up a tree or something.......
I have a heavy duty Massey F mower... almost too heavy for the N's... without weights, the mower will pull front end off the ground on a slight incline....
The reason I ask, is that I have been known to snap grade 8 bolts in the mower shaft at times in heavy brush.... need a clutch that will "hold up"...

Well it is not really a clutch but it is a safety device. Pretty much all ORCs over riding clutches are the same and you need the one that fits your tractor and your tractors should have the smaller 1-1/8 inch PTO shafts. So what I am saying is buy a ORC and use it ya some are a tad bit better then others but unless you want to spend $100 plus on one and even then you never know which is better buy one from TSC or a dealer but both now days are pretty much the same

The 9N and 8N do not have enough HP to snap a !/2 inch grade 8 bolt unless you hit a stump. It is intended that a grade 2 snap to protect your PTO shaft in your tractor and any overruninng clutch add on.
I run a "Love 5 foot and no-name 6 foot on My 2N and Ford 600, with an overrunning clutch.
Buy one from this site or any other tractor store and it is large enoungh for your tractors.

.... I have seen them from 75 bucks and up.... I will pay more money for higher quality.....
yes, I work my N's, but don't "abuse" them.... They take back heavy brush if smart about it.... just don't wanna throw money at a clutch that can't hold up to heavy cutting....

... it is the mower side that ends up busting.... near the gear box.... I am using a slightly smaller bolt, because i can't get a grade 8 at HD in the correct size.... so the small amount of "play" may be helping to cause it... The mower can handle it... no leaks from gear box or anything in 30+ years.... i have to find a 'snug' pin or bolt.... I end up using 3/8 vs 7/16....
... I DO mow some heavy stuff from time to time..... I just want a clutch that will hold up... don't really care WHAT I have to pay for it.....

If you are putting a Grade 8 bolt in the driveline where there is supposed to be a shear bolt you are asking for trouble as you are going to tear up something expensive. The factory used a shear bolt for a reason- not just because they had a bunch of them laying around.

again, I am sure the proper fit "shear" bolt would hold up better than a loose or "too small" grade 8 bolt..... but, I don't seem to have many of them just "laying around".... I have to work.... rest assured, I will never put my N's thru anything I am not convinced they can handle... I watched my father mow with one for 30 yrs, welded head and all, steam flying all over the place, pouring water in it he collected from a swamp! i 'work" my N's, but don't punish them.... I don't boil them over, and I pay close attention to how they are acting... Yes, I will work them hard from time to time as I have to.... but I am not an idiot like my father was.... I have seen these N's in action.... I am a believer in them... They will do anything you ask if you are smart about it...
The bolt that busts is on the gear box of the mower... She has never broken the adapter pin... so, I must believe that the pin in the adapter is tougher than the bolt I am using.... so throw "grade 8" out the window...
The reason I posted, was to try and find a clutch that is decent made... not made out of paper, or "made in china"... yes, it will be subject to some tough mowing conditions at times.... so I didn't want to throw my money at garbage... was just looking for any advice anybody had with them....any experiences....

you will damage the input shaft an yoke that rdes on it using too small a bolt.

stick the proper size gr2 bolt int here.. or get an ORC AND a torque limiting clutch..

size the driveline afterwards..
