PTO compatability

I have an IH 300 utility. I have found out that I need a live pto according to the sn, and have found one off of a farmall 400. The person selling it says that it should fit the farmall 300 but wasn't sure about the utility, I was hoping someone here might know.

The unit may be the same, But the drive shaft will not be. Check assembly part numbers on the caseih.com site parts listing. Jim

Can you explain what needing a live PTO means?

If the 300 is equiped to use the independent PTO the units are the same. But when used on a 300 a extra piece thats needed to mount it is used between the pto and transmission housing.
Also if you don't have the operating linkage they are different.

PTO delete from factory, the serial number must have a suffix of S, R means transmission driven.

A live PTO is often referred to as an independent PTO.It has a drive mechanism and clutch that is separate from the clutch that drives the transmission. That way when you stop the tractor it doesn't also stop the PTO. Previous to live PTO's the PTO operated from the same clutch as the transmission.
