pto control after sos to 4sp conversion

I have an elenco equiped 801 tractor with a 4sp converted from SOS. The PTO is engauged constantly with no ability to shut off. Does anyone have experience in correcting this? Looking through the fill port, I can see the control linkage goes to the upper shafts (which I think was the SOS driveline disengauge feature, to allow a non running tractor to be moved)and I believe the PTO shaft/coupling is the lower one.

You must swap out the PTO shaft and shifting mechanism from the 4 speed donor tractor.

Ues, the PTO shaft if beneath the driveshaft.

The S-O-S traction disengage mechanism must be removed in order to use the inspection cover with PTO shifter lever from the donor tractor.

Without the traction disengage mechanism on the S-O-S inspection cover (which you must remove) there is nothing to keep the traction coupling in place unless you shade tree it by welding it to one of the shafts.

This was done years ago by someone else, I haven't found a doner tractor yet. What is the best way to work on this, 1 split the tractor or 2 take off the hyd lift topcover? Any negitives to spliting the tractor? It looks realy simple and easier then the hyd lift cover.
I can't imagine how they permently engauged the pto, but I have not seen the insides of either type (sos/standard). I hope they didn't weld it???

The control lever for the pto would normally be on the left inspection plate, but since you have an Elenco the drive unit is bolted in that spot. With the chain drive for the Elenco gearbox I doubt you have anything resembling the original sos traction disconnect anymore. When the Elenco was installed the pto control lever should have been relocated to the side of the housing just in front of the Elenco gearbox. If there is nothing there, they could have been lazy enough to just put the pto in gear and forget about it. It will stay because it's detented. It's also possible to put the engagement lever on the other side of the rear end housing. Got anything over there? Your best access to see whats going on and decide how to fix it will be to pull the top lift cover. If you split the tractor the pto drive unit will stay attached to the transmission and you won't be able to see how it was positioned in there.

Thanks, The SOS control was drilled and installed as per the elenco instructions specificly for the driveline disconnect and it is just in front of the T-case (but it is a different position then a gear drive tractor would be). However now it doesn't move more then a slight fraction of an inch (and no reason to disconnect the trans to axle anyways). I guess I will have to buy a top cover gasket kit and dive in, one of these days. Thanks again.

When they installed the Elenco kit it had the SOS so there was no need to install the PTO shifter. When it got changed to a 4 speed they should have added the pto lever however Elenco originally specified for the 4 and 5 speed tractors. Apparently nobody bothered to do that. You just ned to do some minor backyard engineering. Have fun!
