I have an all electric house without even a fireplace. I do have a couple of generators. One is small 5,000 watt Coleman and then I have an older Winpower 6,000/10,000 watt pto powered one. The 6,000 continuous power is pretty modest for my needs. Therefore, I am thinking of upgrading.
When I look self contained backup ones at 20kw, they look to run over $10,000, plus the propane tank purchase/rental and annual inspections/maintenance
Now I have two tractors with roughly 35 horsepower at the drawbar . A Farmall 340 and a Farmall Super H bored out to be the horsepower of a Farmall 300. I am looking at a Winco PTO generator that produces 15kw (model 99840-004) at both surge and continuous power and is single phase. It runs about $2,000.
I have a cart with the older pto unit, which I will try to sell and keep the cart. Or, I may install the new unit on the fast hitch carrier I have with some adapting for the pto.
I have my power usage from my power supplier. My peak usage usually is between 7.2 to 11.7 kw, but on rare occasions it has peaked at 18.4. I do not know if at the peak if we had the oven and dryer working and electric heaters on in my shop all going in cold weather. Last February with -30 weather in our area, the peak was 15 kw. Will a 15 kw meet my needs if I am careful about usage? It is just for backup in emergencies.
Also, should I install a Murphy switch on my tractors? If so, any idea as to how much they are and how hard they are to install.
Lots of questions and probably some I do not know enough to ask, but I am just not wanting to spend money needlessly, and I want to still end up being happy with the results. Thanks in advance for any advice.
