PTO help needed

It's been a while since I been on, but!

I need some help with my pto shaft. Tractor is a '63 4000 with sos. I pulled the shaft to replace the seal & gasket. What is it for? I have to assume it's not oem to my tractor. It had a sleeve welded against the bearing to hold it in place, against a ring clip in the groove. I cut the welds, and removed sleeve & bearing. No matter what, the bearing was bad.

Does anyone have a pto shaft for a '63 4000 with sos? I don't know if it matters if it's sos or not.

Another bolt removed, holding something that needs to be fixed, replaced, or repaired! Not one bolt a missed!

Thanks, Pat

All you are missing is the horseshoe snapring. Replace brg and sleeve if buggered up. It can be pressed on but warming up helps get on easier.

So you are saying this is correct pto shaft for my tractor with the sleeve welded on? How would you change the bearing?

I need to find another one, because the splines are worn pretty bad. I could weld them, and then grind them to back shape again. But I'd rather just find a replacement one.

Thanks, Pat

Wouldn't removing the snap ring have allowed you to remove the bearing from the front?

There is a sleeve that fits the shaft and provides the surface for the seal. I'm assuming this sleeve needs to be welded in place to prevent the shaft moving laterally in the bearing.

It seems like the SOS shaft would be different because the PTO clutch is in the transmission. However, I don't see that called out in Ford's parts schematics.

I didn't look hard enough. The SOS PTO shaft is a different part # than the gear drive PTO shaft. The SOS shaft is a 312109 and is NLS by CNH. The gear drive is a 312091 or a 312428 heavy duty.

If you look at the second picture you'll see a bearing surface towards the front, that is a larger diameter then what the bearing shaft surface is.

You can see that the splines are wore out. I cleaned & welded them up today. Tomorrow I'll grind them back into shape...................Hopefully!
