PTO / Hydraulic Lift

My Hydraulic lift on 1941 9n is making a growling / maybe a grinding sound a bit when I lift my brush hog.

Any thoughts on what this would be. It has adequate hydraulic fluid level. Although it does have slow leak on rear left side.

Also the dip stick indicates a full line / with the additional words "with all cylinders extended"? I'm not sure what this means and how tell that all cylinders are extended. Anyone have any advice or ideas if I have an issue or not with the noise?

Jim......."with all cylinders extended".......means some of Ford's disc cultivators are too wide and heavy for 3-point lift so they have hydraulic operated road wheels extended by the built-in hydraulic cylinders. Highway dept kinda gitts upset iff'n you scratch their asphalt or concrete.

As fer the growling / grinding sound, semi-normal. The leak has 'nuttin' to do with it. ......Dell

Dell thanks. I appreciate your response. I'm learning as I go. Is the leak a normal thing also....or put another way does it require immediate attention?

Jim........welp, is the "slow leak" an axle leak??? Greasy brakes are NOT a good thing. The axles have a poor outter seal and the axle bearing is lube'd by "splash" lube from yer diffy oil slinger. "sure-seals" are the "cure". Do a search at the top of the page of this great N-Board to learn more.

...or... is the leak at the bottom of the axle trumpet??? The lower 3-point lift pins sometimes develop leaks. The "cure" is NEW gasket but'cha haffta remove yer lower lift arm first. They can be summb#ichs to remove. Also the lower 3-point lift pin must be torqued to 150ft/lbs from INSIDE the axle trumpet. That means you haffta remove yer axle, brake, trumpet ...etc... consult yer FO-4 manual. Me? I just consider most lower link leaks like a dog marking it spot. HTH.......Dell

Thanks Dell. Its a leak right from the left lift arm connection and a bit from the PTO spline.
