PTO hydro pump

I've been looking for an economy hydro pump that I can hook-
up to my PTO to run a log splitter that I am retrofitting to be a
tractor drawn & powered splitter, and provide hydro via a PTO
pump, rather than the slow internal hydro pump. Most hydro
pumps seem to be rated for much higher RPM's than the PTO, so
at only ~500 rpms on the PTO the pump output will be slow. I've
been looking to make, or buy a low cost gearbox or chain drive
deal that I could bolt-on to the hydro pump that would increase
my PTO speed to ~3:1 or so to get the hydro pump up to rated
RPMs.
I'm wondering if any of you guys have made such a thing using
an old gearbox off a brush hog or something?
I stumbled across this old WWII era truck hydro pump on Ebay
that I am thinking of trying to make a hitch to mount on the
back to hook-up to the PTO, but have no idea what speed a
truck PTO would have been, or the direction of rotation. Is there
a "typical" or "standard" for that sort of thing? I attached the
link for that hydro pump I'm talking about.
I don't have hundreds of dollars to buy a new "real" PTO pump,
like a Prince, etc., and have not seen used PTO pumps anywhere,
been looking for a while.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the tractor world, hydostatic transmissions are called "hydros".

Ususally, the hydraulics are just called "hydraulics".

Here's the type of pump you need for LOTS of GPM's at slow speeds. Likely, you could idle the engine down quite a bit, and still have enough power and enough GPM's.

A PTO shaft extension will be needed to extend the short PTO to go through the pump. (Readily available.)

Remember the "500 RPM" PTO is at or just above 2/3 throttle.... may be faster than you want for economy sake.

A 4 or 5-to-1 chain drive would do it for you...
but the pump shown by Bob is a cleaner deal.

Winches driven from a PTO attached to the side of large truck transmissions run at around 400 to 500rpm input shaft speed.The PTO has a selector for forward/reverse direction of PTO shaft.

Bush hog gear box ratios(my four) run 1.2, 1.46, 1.5, 1.9 to 1. Step up blade relative to PTO.

Some tractors had a PTO speed of ~1000rpm & some hay balers used a reduction unit to obtain 540 for baler. You might find one and run it in reverse for step up.
 
P.S....

Truck PTO's operate pretty close to engine speed, (depends upon the specific transmission/PTO combo) and the pumps are typiclly set up to give the needed GPM's at 800 - 1200 engine RPM's.

Often, the PTO driveline will "fly apart" if the driver forgets to disengage the PTO and the driveline screams along at engine highway speeds. (We are talking about a dumptruck here, NOT a PTO system the is set up for continuous high RPM operation.)

If you really want to do it "on the cheap", look for a LARGE surplus pump with a HIGH GPM output, so it will give you the 3 to 8 GPM output you want @ the LOW speed of the Ford PTO.

An adapter would be needed from it's splined shaft to the PTO, also easily "doable".

Be sure to check rotation. IIRC, it would need to be a CCW unit.

OR use a small pump, and set up a "stinger' drive off of the front of the crankshaft. Since the engine turns about 3X the speed of the PTO, the pump can then be 1/3 the size.
