I have a 1945 John Deere B with power lift. When the PTO is engaged the PTO shaft turns but there is an internal sound similar to a playing card placed in the spokes of a bicycle. Moreover the power lift does not work. Any thoughts?
 
Sounds like it's not engaging all the way. Gears are rubbing together. Remove the top cover and inspect the shaft. Might have a roll pin sheared not allowing the gears to mesh. Good Luck.
