Which direction does the PTO seal go in? One side is tapered and the other side is open with the spring visible on the inside. From reading through the archives, someone said "O" goes to the oil (for open side.) I have installed two seals with the tapered side pointing towards the rear of the tractor, and the open side (spring side) to the oil. Both times the seals have leaked. It"s to the point where I am thinking the shaft may be scored too much for the seal to keep oil from going past it.

I succesfully installed one on a previous 8N and it didn"t leak, but I don"t have that tractor anymore and I"m not sure it was put in the same way.

Thanks.

The open side goes to the oil. My 2n has a shaft that is so worn that it still leaked. I don;t use the pto, so I put some teflon tape on the pto cover and it doesn't leak anymore.

that spring side to the oil.

does the surface the seal rid on look worn, scratched or pitted.. if minor scatch, try a lil sand paper.. very fine.. otherwise.. just replace it.

Will try to check it out tonight. Figured that was probably the case, if it was too worn that it was not getting a good seal.

Yes its an eazy job to R&R PTO assembly. But like I said my shaft is worn and needs replaced. I donn't replace everything that is wrong with the 2n I have a 2 n for everyday usage, It's not a show tractor, like I said I don't ever use or need the pto WHY REPLACE IT>

for 'when' you need it.. never know when that emergency might pop up.. and it would be like.. darn.. wish I had an operable pto!!!

if it is a bearing issue.. it's cheap to fix. if it's a seal and a wear ring.. it's cheap to fix.

if the pto shaft spline is shot and bearing is bad and seal is bad, it's easy to find the shaft with bearing installed from used sellers... then you just need a new seal.

if your bearing carrier is damaged, they are available here or used.. or as a used assembly, or a new assembly.

Might as well have a functional tractor, even though it doesn't have to be in 100% condition.

your machine though.. just sayin..

I used a little fine emery paper to buff it up a bit. Also, the original seals were much wider than the replacements, and sleeve wear is not constant. When you drive the seal in, be very careful and you can position it over the best part of the sleeve. Good luck!

I appreciate your input, but I just don't feel the need tu spend money on something I don't need. I have a New Holland TC35 and use it for everything that needs a PTO. The 2 n is just for pulling the cultivator thru the sweet corn. Dont want to adjust the wheel spacing on the tc35.

forgot to mention to keep in mind that the pto shaft runs the hyd pump.. if you need hyds, then the pto shaft is turning.

thus if the bearing is bad or going bad.. you may shell that area out eventually and not know it till the hyds stop.

again.. just sayin.

I don't always fix everything perfect.. though I usually aim for everything to be not 'broke'.

your tractor and your money though.. no problem at all with that concept.
