PTO Shafts - how much HP

Hello Guys

Following on from the triangular PTO shaft thread, does anyone know of a table showing how much HP triangular shafting will take in various sizes.

I have a flail mower ( 1.75m/5'9" cut - hammer type knives) with such a shaft and it seems light for the power it will take - all the poor old Massey 165 will deliver plus some in heavy going !!

Its (the shaft) getting pretty knackered so what to replace it with ??

I forget the series numbers on the metric shaft but I'm sure you've got an adequate shaft for the type use the mower was intended for. It's probably in the 40-50 hp range.
Generally you measure the cross size (both distance across, from cup to cup and cup diameter) to determine the shaft series.
I just replace the tubes if they get bad as they aren't all that expensive, but I only replace them if the shaft won't scope any longer. You should be able to change the tubes in under and hour IF they're the type retained with a roll pin. If they're welded in, then you have to cut the welds, grind the yolks clean, fit the new tube over the pilot that's on the yolk (if you haven't cut it away, then weld the new ones in place taking care to insure that you maintian the correct phase angle of the joints...
