Pto Size 1-1/8

I have a ford 850 old tractor that was a given to me when dad upgraded to a newer tractor. It has a pto shaft size 1 1/8 it has a Over Running Coupler that goes from 1 1/8" to 1-3/8". Im worried about the strength of that size of shaft? Im afraid the pto shaft will break while brush hoging , should i consder a pto conversion kit. I wanna be able to bush hog light brush.

I would not worry about your PTO shaft that has already lasted over 50 years.

Replace it with the now standard 1 3/8" shaft if and when it breaks.

I would bet you'd break about any or everything in
the brush hog long before you break the tractor
PTO. Your Brush hog probably has a shear pin or
other sacrificial component that will break long
before expensive stuff starts getting hurt. Like
Dean said if you break it upgrade, until then don't
worry be happy!!!

That PTO shaft was designed for the hp output of the PTO drive, so you shouldn't worry about the shaft diameter. As long as you go with a mower that's designed for the hp of the tractor, then the shear pins or slip clutch will protect the PTO and the rest of the tractor. Just don't go hooking up a mower that's rated for "up to 90 hp" or anything silly like that, as the protection built into the mower may not kick in until something in the tractor has already been damaged.

that original 1 1/8 shaft is likely higher quality than a new chinese 1 3/8 shaft. plus.. the actual shaft diameter is the same on each.. stub end is the big difference.

that machine was mad with 48ish pto hp.. that shaft will run all 48 of them fine..

plety of more important things to worry about.. like the election in november....

if the pto shaft breaks.. repalce it. easy 4 bolt job and some deep buckets to hold oil..

The splines will wear off the end of that shaft before it breaks.
