PTO snap ring

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I'm struggling to remove the snap ring from my PTO bearing retainer. I guess snap ring pliers weren't invented in 1948 cause I can't see any way to use them. I might be able to pry it out if I had three hands, yet I doubt old Ford mechanics took two people to remove a snap ring. Is there a simple technique or tool I'm missing?

You can find these at Harbor Freight or Sears - They are about 6" total in length. Use the 90 to reach beneath one end of the snap ring and fish it out while holding the other end with the hooked one or even a small screwdriver. It ain't a bad job if you hold your mouth just right.

That's exactly what I used, along with a small screwdriver. It's a little tricky, just when you think you're going to have it out, it pops back in :) Stick with it, you'll get it out.

So now you're the tool police?

I figured since I paid for them I could use them where they will help solve a problem. Allowing that "helping" concept may be foreign to you as it seems you leave a negative comment for most responses.

Please, if you can't make a positive contribution, consider keeping your fingers away from the keyboard.

Dont tell people to do things that may hurt them.Snap rings are very hard and could snap one of those points off.Your picks your eyes.

You mean you don't wear saftey glasses?!?!

Shrapnel gets in side saftey glasses.Fellow I talked with had a bit of slag come in from the side, bounce off the inside of the lens into his eye.I have a photo of a saftey glass lens with a piece of drill bit that punched thru the lens. Its posted near my drill press.Local fellow has a scar from his lower lip down across his throat from a chop saw that had a blade let go.

I have had a splinter of steel picked out of my eyeball, by an ER Dr., with a needle, just like I would pick a splinter, out of my hand.

I should have known better that cutting that muffler off, with an air chisel, without safety glasses.

He said to me, you better not move your eyeball while I do this, or I may blind you.

Try watching a needle, come at your eyeball, while keeping your eye open, and not moving your eyeball.

Perhaps you could inform us as to exactly what tools are meant for removing that snap ring and the exact procedure for doing it?

According to you, safety glasses are next to useless. I have a pair of prescription safety glasses. they even have side shields built into the frames.

I think I'd rather have something contact those glasses first before contacting my eyes. Even if the glasses break, they have slowed down the object.

Your contributions always bring such positivity to the forum.

I am trying to point out to the dimwits on here that they can get hurt even with saftey glasses.Cant you read?Still laughing at the condition of your fuel system.Worse that you had the nerve to show us that lack of care you give your tractor.A gasket and screen costs 2.70 here and I have a spare in my small parts cabinet.

I'm so happy for you having your head stuffed full of such a vast amount of knowledge and living in your little perfect world. :D :D :D :D

I honestly don't know why you bother to post here only to run down people. Why don't you just do us a favor and quietly go away?

They should change your forum title to "Everything Expert".

Would be happy to be a little kid again but I'm 64 so your stupid sarcasm didn't work. If you really want to learn something why don't you learn that it's not appropriate to come on here calling people dimwits just because you think you're so darn smart. My thinking is that your are more of a tart smass. Oh darn, my spell checker didn't work.

Fuel system all fixed with absolutely no help from you. The other guys were helpful though. Thanks guys.

I was watching my dad fix his Model A Ford 5 years before you were born,Used to get wrenches for him.I dont use a spell checker.Every body knows things you dont know, get over it.

Yeah.....an you used to trudge ten miles to school through ten feet of snow and had to fight off wooly mammoths along the way and so on and so on....

Listen buddy, nobody cares about your age. All it proves is that you're a crotchety old coot who shoots off his mouth and puts people down. You're age is not an excuse for bad manners.

You seem to be wearing your age as some kind of medal. It doesn't mean jack to me, so [b:160befacf2]you[/b:160befacf2] get over it. I see that you were to dumb to figure out what the spell checker thing meant. Nobody cares what you did 70 years ago before tools were invented.

Saw your clutch pedal post.Hardy har har.Wisdom comes with age,its plain that didnt happen with you.We learn by doing.I got on the school bus in front of my house.I know what a spell checker is ,never use.I mis spell a word so what.I see a lot of misspelling on here so what, I know what the poster is saying.

Boy, nothing gets by you does it slick? Concerning the "spell checker" thing, you still don't get it. Never mind, it's beyond your comprehension.

I don't care if you're 170 years old. Your age doesn't mean anything to me and it does not grant you any special favors. With the exception that you may have Alzheimer's and should not be held responsible for what you're saying.

Personally though I don't think that's the case. I just think as I surmised before that you're just a crotchety old coot who thinks he has done something magical by being alive and annoying people for 70 years.

No special award for you. There are plenty of crotchety old coots in this world.

Have a Nice Day.

I'm a little curious, how long was that bus that you got on?

(quoted from post at 17:37:32 02/26/11) Carye,You dont know nuthin ,you dont even suspect nuthin.

Great come back. I'll bet you put a lot of thought into that little gem.
