PTO spline came off

The PTO spline came off of my dads 8N. I found a broken sleeve or pin or something that I believe is whats left of whatever secures the external spline to the spline shaft. What do I need to do to fix this?

That is an ORC over running clutch. Most any farm and home store have them and the part you need is a simple roll pin if it is still good

If your 8N still has the original 1 1/8 spline PTO shaft, and the over running coupler is 1 3/8 spline, there was an adapter sleeve. That would be what shattered.

To me it looks like the roll pin that holds the ORC on broke so then the ORC came off

I agree. I have seen a few N's that still have the 1 1/8 PTO, so I wanted him to be aware of that possibility.

Good morning, mine did the same thing recently.

There were/are two different PTO shafts available. The original had a 1 1/8 six spline output, and
the later had a 1 3/8 six spline output. Correspondingly, there were two over run couplers (ORC)
available with the female splines to match.

Mine had the smaller, 1 1/8 splines.

If that is your setup, what you need is a 5/16 X 2 (8MM X 50MM) roll pin. DO NOT install a longer
pin! (The good folks at our local tractor store sold me a 2 1/2 pin. If I had installed it, both
sections would have been locked together and the important OVER RUN feature would have been
defeated!

IMPORTANT!!! IF you have a 1 3/8 shaft, you will need a somewhat longer pin. (Sorry, I do NOT know
that dimension.)

In either case, when installing, it is IMPORTANT to be sure that the pin is CENTERED (this may take
some careful tapping back and forth), making sure that the clutch drives in one direction and
ratchets freely in the other.
