PTO startinging to kick out

I have a 1952 8n and the pto is starting to kick out when the blades on my bush hog get dull. How hard is it to fix the pto?

A little more detail would be good. A 'bungy' on the lever might help. HTH

It only happens when I am mowing in tall thick grass. i have thought of the bungy and may try that and keeping the blades sharp. I not sure if I want to tackle splitting the tractor yet.

It probably has a loose PTO bearing. Or a broken snap ring groove in the PTO bearing housing. Or maybe the bearing retainer sleeve moved.

You don't need to split the tractor to work on the PTO shaft.

Drain the fluid out (see tips 3 & 4 at the link below). Remove the 4 bolts holding the PTO shaft in & pull it to the rear & out of the tractor. Slide the new shaft w/ new bearings & a new seal in. (Put some grease on the seal) Replace the gasket. Add fluid.

That's it. New shaft w/ bearings & seal goes for about $120 as I recall.

If you're in need of mission creep......drop the pump & clean it. All you need for that is a new gasket & a gallon or two of diesel or kerosene to soak the pump.

Its not a hard fix even if you have to remove the PTO support from the
back of the trans,,, are riggernig it with a bungee cord and turn it into a hard expensive fix... sooner are later you are gonna tear sum'n up that's gonna turn in to a real mess... A PTO jump'n out of engagement is not normal,,,find the cause and repair it...

Theirs only one detent ball in the hole PTO deal,,, its trapped in the PTO support,, it taint going know were I guarantee it ....

I would say in/out play in the PTO shaft is the #1 cause of the PTO jump'n out of engagement... Either its a mechanical failer of the PTO shaft/BRG/ snap-ring are something external that caused the failer...

If all that checks out its time to remove the PTO support for inspection...

A bungee is not the answer,,, Fix it leave the riggernig'n to those that don't know chit about what they are talk'n about....
